Is Thyroid Disorder related to Breast Cancer?

For my loyal readers, I think they should have known that I am so into thyroid disease. This is because I have come to know that thyroid disease is far more prevalent than originally thought. Do you know that according to recent findings, there are an estimated 13 million Americans unaware of and undiagnosed for their current thyroid conditions?

And, please remember, that’s only for America. How about other women around the world? Will the total of undiagnosed patients exceed 30 million or even more? That’s serious, isn’t it? In fact, If you try to ask around within Malaysia, you will realized women with thyroid problems are everywhere, at least it’s really more than you can imagine.

So, I am going to talk about the connection between thyroid gland disorder and breast cancer. As I decided to blog for Boods, I have this topic in mind which I believe it is a very important information that many remain unaware of.

The coincidence of both breast cancer and thyroid disorders is still a subject of extensive debate. However, prevention is always better than cure. As we already know that this subject has already call for many research. Obviously, it is a high possibility that they are closely related. Anyway, how they are related?

Some of the finding shows that,

1. Thyroid cancer in younger women increases their risk for breast cancer five to twenty years later.

2. Thyroid hormone has a direct and crucial role in the development of breast cancer.

3. Non-toxic goiter (an enlarged thyroid) was more than twice as common in the breast cancer patients.

4. Use of thyroid supplements does not increase the risk of developing breast cancer.

5. The prevalence of thyroid disorders is increased in patients with breast cancer, and thyroid autoimmune disorders, especially Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, account to a large extent for the increased prevalence of thyroid disease in patients with breast cancer.

As for me, I am concern over No 2. However, there is no significant prove to support this statement yet. But, at least we learn that to prevent breast cancer, may be we should take good care of our thyroid gland too. :)

And for No 1, I think it is considered a proven statement though. Check this out for more information on it. :)

Who would have thought that some disorders are actually linked to any types of cancer? I mean, we’ve read that anybody can get cancer, and many times we’re caught just like that *snaps fingers* and there are really no explanations to it.

Ya…. but a health freek like me do concern on the cause. :)
